Eric Quigley Named to USTA Summer Collegiate National Team

UK tennis star Eric Quigley has been named as one of 19 male and female collegiate playerst o the 2011 United States Tennis Association Summer Collegiate Team.

Here is an excerpt from the UK release:
The USTA Summer Collegiate Team is an elite training program for the top American collegiate tennis players. The program began in 1996 and is funded by the USTA. It is designed to provide college players with valuable exposure to the USTA Pro Circuit in a team-oriented environment during the summer months.

This summer, USTA player development will host two Pro Tour Transition camps – one for the men, one for the women – for the selected players. The men’s camp was held June 9-15 on clay courts in Boca Raton, Fla., while the women’s camp will be conducted July 2-8 on hard courts in Boca Raton. Additional training opportunities for top American collegiate players will also occur over the summer in Boca Raton and Carson, Calif.

“I had a lot of fun last year playing on this team and to be selected again really is an honor,” Quigley said. “I always look forward to playing against great competition to try to improve my game and this is a great chance for me to do that again. I am excited to be working with some great coaches and playing with some of the best players in the nation.”

Bo Hodge, assistant men’s tennis coach at the University of Alabama, and Notre Dame’s associate head coach Ryan Sachire will be coaching the men’s team. Hodge also coached the men’s team in 2010.

The top six American players from the season-ending ITA national singles rankings were eligible for automatic selections. The remaining players on each team were selected by USTA Player Development staff in conjunction with USTA National Coaches, and current collegiate coaches. All 19 of the players selected received 2011 ITA All-American honors.

Of the 13 male members selected to the team, four are from the Southeastern Conference, more than any other conference. Quigley, who joins a short list of Wildcats to be selected to the team, will join fellow SEC foes Sekou Bangoura from Florida, and Tennys Sandgren and Rhyne Williams of Tennessee on the team. A full list of players selected is below.

Quigley ended the season with a No. 7 ranking, marking the highest final ranking for the Kentucky program since former All-American Bruno Agostinelli finished the 2009 season ranked fourth in the nation. The junior’s high mark is now tied for the fourth-highest final singles ranking in school history, equaling former UK All-American Jesse Witten’s No. 7 ranking in 2004. Witten holds the highest final singles ranking in school history with his No. 3 mark in 2005, while Witten and Agostinelli are tied for second with a No. 4 ranking in 2002 and 2009, respectively.
