Southern Miss offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson has finally named a starting quarterback for tomorrow’s game vs. Kentucky.
True sophomore Keon Howard will get the start for the Golden Eagles tomorrow.
Here are details from the Hattiesburg American:
Now, it’s Howard’s turn to take the ball from the get-go. The true sophomore will start Southern Miss’ season opener against Kentucky (3 p.m. Saturday at M.M. Roberts Stadium), according to a source with direct knowledge of the situation.
Howard edged teammate Kwadra Griggs in a battle that spanned the entire offseason. Howard, no stranger to competition, said he actually prefers it that way.
“I can still remember my ninth-grade year, going through the same type of battle I’m going through now,” he said. “It was me and James Crosby (now at Mississippi Valley State). But I was going against an older guy then and that kind of helped me to prepare because I’ve got to understand things on their level.”
Offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson pointed toward competition as a significant factor in Howard being named the starting quarterback.
“When you’re out there competing and you see (the other person) playing really well, you’re like, ‘I better turn it up or I’m going to get left behind,’” he said.
