I recently had a great interview with 2012 LHP Chase Mullins out of Bourbon County HS. Chase is what’s known as a “legacy player”, as his dad (Ron Mullins) was a professional baseball player drafted 21st overall in the 1985 MLB draft by the Cincinnati reds organization. But don’t expect him to lean on his dad’s name, Chase is well on his way to making a name for himself.
Not only is Chase ranked #140 in the nation by Scout, he is a PerfectGame 1st team All-American. And at the WWBA World Championship in Jupiter FL last fall, Chase was noted as one of the 30 “impact players” out of around 2,000 prospects who played in what was called “the most heavily scouted baseball event in history”.
Mullins has already heard from teams like the Mets, Brewers and Nationals, and expects to be hearing from the Angels as well. At 6’ 8”, being a left-handed pitcher, and capable of a 96 mph fastball, he will probably be hearing from a lot more major league teams before it’s all said and done.
Chase finished his junior year 7 and 2, pitching 46.67 innings, getting 76 strikeouts, 39 walks and surrendering only 1 home run all year (4.436 ERA). At the plate he had 82 at-bats with 27 runs, 31 RBI and 6 home runs (.427 batting average). His best move? The pickoff from the mound.
File under “things you didn’t know about Chase Mullins”: he’s a drummer. In fact, there are more videos on YouTube featuring his drumming than his pitching (here’s one). And if you’d like to follow him on Twitter, you can do so at @CHASEmullins12.
Great interview, great kid. I expect great things in his future.
