Joker Phillips Says He Didn’t Have Enough Time to Build a Successful Program at UK

Former UK football head coach Joker Phillips has an interesting opinion about his time in Lexington.

Phillips, who was 13-24 in 3 seasons as head coach of the Wildcats, says he didn’t have enough time to build a successful program at UK.

Phillips is now an assistant coach at Cincinnati.

Here are more of Phillips’ comments:

The 54-year-old Phillips is wide receivers coach on the staff of first-year UC head coach Luke Fickell. After several years in the fast lane of the Southeastern Conference, Phillips is quite content in the “Group of Five” American Athletic Conference.

“It’s been a great experience,” Phillips said Monday, after UC’s latest practice here at Camp Higher Ground. “Coming back and seeing all the improvements that the program has made facility-wise and that the city has made, and also the university.”

Phillips first coached at UC two decades ago, under Rick Minter. Phillips was UC wide receivers coach in 1997 and defensive backs coach in 1998.

“It’s a different job than it was 20 years ago,” Phillips said. “Being with coach Fick, I’m not chasing any goals and I’m not chasing bigger money. I’m chasing good people, and I’m with a good person. I’m happy to be here with him.”
