Hartline in the Lead

Jeff Drummond of Kentucky Ink has been doing a fabulous job of covering the Kentucky Spring Practice. I am always interested in who the quarterback will be, as most of Kentucky fans usually are. Here is what he had to say about the QBs in today’s practice:[PRBREAK][/PRBREAK]

[QUOTE]People always want to know about the QBs, so I’ll get that out of the way quickly. All of us watching practice today in the media corps were unanimous: if the season started this week, Mike Hartline would be the likely starter. He had the best day of the QBs by a wide margin today, and he’s consistently made more plays (and fewer mistakes) than the other guys. He’s throwing the ball down field better than he ever has, and has a better overall command of the offense from his experience. This should not be read as disappointment for either Newton or Mossakowski. With Newton, he’s made some outstanding plays. Then he’ll turn around and miss an easy one. Hit and miss. A perfect example was today, when he made 2-3 nice deep throws, but missed guys on 5-yard dump-offs. On one play, he threw high and behind Cobb, which almost got him decapitated by the defense. I think it’s the throws like that he needs to improve. When he’s going down the field with the ball, he looks pretty good. Regarding Mossakowski, I think he’s showing some signs of arm fatigue. He’s getting a ton of reps, and his shoulder may not be used to this kind of rapid-fire work coming off the surgery. His ball isn’t as crisp as it was the first two or three days. Like Newton, he’ll make a great throw, then two or three not-so-good throws.

I have always thought Joker will go with experience first and if Mike Hartline is also doing the job in practice there is no question who the quarterback will be at the beginning of the year. I really hope the other two keep up and pushing each other. Competition is the best gauge of who a player really is. Go Cats!!
