Joker Talks Game One – Kentucky – Lousiville

Kentucky football’s “Operation Win” goes into full swing this Saturday against in-state and arch rival Louisville.

The Cats have won the last three against the Cards and are favored going into Saturday’s match up but as Coach Phillips discusses, you really don’t know what to expect from the new look Cards.

The big news was the announcement that junior walk-on Luke McDermott, a Trinity, product, would start at defensive tackle.

The 6-foot-1, 265-pound McDermott has played in just six career games, but judging by the reaction from Monday’s press luncheon, he has the respect of his teammates.

Senior defensive end DeQuin Evans said the defensive line is motivated by comments that were relayed to him by Phillips made by Louisville Coach Charlie Strong regarding the Cardinal offensive line being the strength of his team.

“He said that as the (Louisville) offensive line goes, we go,” Evans said. “My coach always brings that up. I take that as a slight to the defensive line, more than anything. We’re the guys that have got to bang with them up front every play, so we take that kind of personally. I just feel like we’ve got to do something up front about that so that won’t happen.”

Joker Quotes From His Press Conference:

“My thoughts are similar to other seasons I’ve started, but I’m sure, maybe Saturday morning I’ll be hugging the toilet or somewhere, I don’t know.”

“The thing that I know that I have to be is have my emotions under control.”

“I like to attack. I mean I did in 2007. I don’t know if people classified me as an attacker in 2008-09 but I want to be aggressive, get the ball down the field. Tony gave me a stat that in 2007, our average scoring drive was 2:00. That’s attacking to me.”

“I feel really good about Mike’s ability to identify and get us in the best protection possible and also know where his problems are. That’s the thing a quarterback needs to know. Can fix things, if he doesn’t have time to fix it, he understands how to site adjust which we call quick passes. So he knows where his built in insights are. He understands it, I think he’ll be fine.”

“Mike’s won a lot of games, okay. And I dont consider it managing. We’ve won with the QB position. The game he got hurt he was the guy giving us a chance to win that game. That’s the reason why he’s our starter now. He gives us the best chance to win.”

“It could happen in the first quarter, second quarter, third quarter, it could be after the first play. We have to be able to adjust. If their not running their offense, the things their coordinator has ran in UNLV, our defense has to adjust. Same thing offensively.”

“Randy will call the plays and call them from the box. I will listen and we all will have input.”

“If either team is going to have a great year, its important to get this one. Momentum is the biggest thing to come out of this game here and its important for both teams involved to make sure you leave this game with momentum to carry you for the rest of the season. I dont think either team can have a great year without winning this one.”
