Mississippi State Survives Miami (OH) and Dan Mullen’s Coaching to Win St. Petersburg Bowl

Mississippi State has the Southeastern Conference off to a 1-0 start this bowl season despite some bizarre decision-making by head coach Dan Mullen.

The Bulldogs blocked a kick in the final seconds to survive Miami (OH) 17-16 in the St. Petersburg Bowl.

Mississippi State (6-7) was in position to lose the game because of a bizarre decision by Mullen.

State was safely in field goal range when starting quarterback Nick Fitzgerald was injured. Rather than attempting a field goal that would put State up by 4 points, Mullen opted to go for it on 4th and 4 with a second string quarterback.

The play failed miserably and allowed Miami an opportunity to win the game.
