Steve Jones of the Courier-Journal says Louisville fans should actually be cheering for an unlikely team right now…the Kentucky Wildcats.
Here is his reasoning:
As unappealing a premise as it may be for some U of L fans, the No. 7 Cards (7-1, 5-1 ACC), who have only one victory over a winning team so far and lack any remaining games against CFP-ranked opponents, would do nothing but benefit from UK (5-3, 4-2 SEC) continuing its surprising success leading up to the Governor’s Cup game.
Though the chances of UK pulling it off are small, if the Wildcats win their next three games – at home against Georgia on Saturday, at Tennessee on Nov. 12 and at home against Austin Peay on Nov. 19 – they would figure to get strong consideration for the CFP top 25. A potential 8-3 UK team would finish second – or maybe even first – in the SEC East and would be one of the best opponents Louisville would face all season, meaning the regular-season finale would be suddenly a chance for a high-quality Cards victory.
UK looks destined at least to get bowl-eligible this season, assuming it beats winless, FCS-level Austin Peay. But it will remain a tall task for the Cats to buck tradition and beat both the Bulldogs (4-4, 2-4 SEC) and the Volunteers (5-3, 2-3 SEC), no matter how mediocre those teams may be this season. ESPN’s Football Power Index gives UK only a 42 percent chance to beat Georgia and a 13 percent chance to beat Tennessee.
