Cody Jones Flying Under the Radar

When we posted the latest football roster a few days ago, I went over it looking for any newcomers or just people I didn’t know. While there were several I was unfamiliar with (mostly walk-ons), there was one that intrigued me: Fullback Cody Jones.

I looked on the internet and couldn’t find anything about him, so I contacted the UK media relations people and this is what they told me.

Cody hails from Williamsburg, Kentucky and graduated from Whitley County HS in 2009 where he played halfback and linebacker. He started all four years and had phenomenal junior and senior seasons. Offensively he rushed 158 times for 1,174 yards and 28 touchdowns his senior year. Defensively he had 131 tackles, 101 of them solo, forced 5 fumbles and blocked 6 kicks his senior year. Jones left Whitley County owning the school’s all-time records for points scored and touchdowns. He participated in both the Border Bowl All-Star and East/West All-Star games.

Jones enrolled at Morehead state in the fall of 2009 and redshirted his first season as a linebacker on the football team. In 2010 he transferred to Kentucky but did not play football. This spring he tried out for the football team and made a big impression, ending up as the starting fullback.

At 5’ 11” and 208 lbs., he’s not the biggest back on the field, but from what I hear he hits like a Mack truck. Jones will be taking the number 37 this year, and could be a great story for the football team. Oh yeah, he’s also an honor roll student majoring in special education. Cody Jones is one to watch this year.
