He still has the same three offers he held at the end of May, but through his summer camp work, a lot of attention has been coming his way.
“I think a lot of coaches want to see how my senior year goes,” Gilchrist said. “They tell me they’re interested, but I think they want to see how much more I will improve. Last year, I think I really improved my footwork and my agility. So, this year I want to work on my technique more. That’s what they want. And I need to get stronger and show everybody that I have a motor that doesn’t stop.”
The 6-foot-5, 245-pound Gilchrist has been working on speed, as well, posting a couple of 4.7 forty times during the camp scene over the summer.
The previously mentioned three offers are from Western Michigan, Eastern Michigan, and Kentucky. The latter offer has been the one to raise his eyebrows, because of the Cats’ membership in what Gilchrist considers the best conference in the country, the SEC. But attention has picked up from the likes of North Carolina State, Ball State, Iowa State, Tennessee State, and Jacksonville State, an OVC opponent of the Cats this upcoming season.
“Kentucky is an offer,” Gilchrist interjected, “…that’s my offer right there. I am really looking forward to going up there in the fall and checking them out. Coach Chuck Smith is recruiting me from there, and I like what he is saying. He’s been telling about their program, the way they run their defense, and how they can use me in it.”
The work Gilchrist has put in on his speed has prompted a few coaches to tell him he could make the move to a linebacker position at the next level, a move that doesn’t faze him. “I don’t care. I played some linebacker last season, and I don’t mind it. I’ll do whatever I need to do to get on the field, and help my team win. That’s all that matters.”
