Rookie head coach Will Muschamp seemed to show that he is in no joking matter taking over as the new Florida head coach.
Coach Muschamp started off by saying “It’s great to be back in the Southeastern Conference and at the University of Florida.” The once coach-in-waiting at Texas continued to harp on how excited he was for the August 5th, the day set for training camp.
But training camp wasn’t the big vocal point for the new head coach. The discussion of the status of running back Jeff Demps and the talk of Muschamps’ transition to Florida stole his ten minutes of comments and questions at the annual media day.
“Jeff Demps is running with the U.S. National Team in Italy. Jeff and I have had great conversations all summer. He is a young man that had a national championship 60 meter, won the national championship as a team with our (UF) indoor track. He got his opportunity in Italy. I granted him permission to do that.”
Muschamp discussed how he, along with the players and staff, still have a lot of trust in quarterback John Brantley. Brantley, who brought a lot of hype with him last season, did not live up to expectations in 2010. However, Brantley was on the ballot of the All-SEC Media selection and will be the starting quarterback for the Gators.
Along with Brantley, Coach Muschamp had this to say about the status of his team.
“(I’m) really pleased with the progress of our football team. Being hired in December, having the opportunity which Urban Meyer allowed me to come to bowl practice, watch our football team work and practice, very appreciate of him and the insight he’s given me.”
With a lot of uncertainty for the Gators, Coach Muschamp himself does not believe the Gators have enough numbers to be able to put the best eleven out there. Only time will tell to see how the Gators match-up against the best in the SEC.
As for you the Big Blue Nation, what do you think the Gators can accomplish in the SEC this year?
