People familiar with the search process say the university is willing to significantly increase what it has paid former coaches in order to attract someone with a proven record to replace Jeff Lebo, who was fired last Friday. A list of candidates includes coaches who could command high salaries, such as Minnesota’s Tubby Smith, who has SEC experience at Kentucky and Georgia. Auburn may make a play for him.

Another possible candidate is Texas-El Paso coach Tony Barbee. UTEP lost to Butler in the tournament Thursday. Another possible candidate is Missouri coach Mike Anderson, whose team plays Clemson today. Anderson is a Birmingham native and former UAB coach.I have and always will be a fan of Tubby Smith. Also keep in mind, that I was in favor of a coaching change when Smith was the head coach at UK. It just seemed like it was time to part ways. This is MUCH different than Rick Pitino leaving our program. When Pitino left our program, it was obvious that he was just a chasing the paper. He just didn’t see/understand the real value of the Nation of Blue.
Today, I’m definitely NOT a Pitino fan. Yes, I admire what he did for UK when he was here, and I’ll always thank him for that. However, that doesn’t mean I have to be a fan. Leaving for the Celtics and basically taking your team with you, just seemed shady to me at the time. Then coming back to college basketball by taking the job at UofL was just a slap in the face… Just saying.
