Chris Westry’s high school coach, Derek Chipoletti, says that he once resembled Bambi more than a big play making college football player.
Now, at Kentucky, Westry had the game-saving interception last weekend against South Carolina, allowing UK to break the 22 road game losing streak!
But that was Westry about 40 lbs ago, when he was a gangly 6′ 4″ cornerback. He had speed and was football savvy with raw skill. Chipoletti promised Westry, “If we can get some meat on you, the sky’s the limit.”
Here is a little from the article from Lexington Herald-Leader, which you can read HERE.
When his high school coach thinks of Chris Westry, he doesn’t think of the player who had the game-saving interception last weekend at South Carolina.
Nope. He thinks of Bambi.
“Imagine him about 40 pounds ago,” Oakleaf High School coach Derek Chipoletti said of Westry, a 6-foot-4, gangly (now) 185-pound cornerback. “He reminded me of Bambi, a newly born deer, little shaky legs, just all knees and elbows.”
“If we can get some meat on you, the sky’s the limit,” Chipoletti promised Westry.
“So to see him after having that conversation with him three years ago and seeing where he’s at now, I’m just glad he had the gumption to stick it out and trust me. Now the sky is opening up for him and there’s no ceiling.”
We are all getting excited to see what the freshman can do this week against Florida. Another game defining play?
