As the NBA draft nears there will certainly be more chatter about who Washington picks as number one. If they go against all professional wisdom (journalist) and do not pick John Wall, the Wizards management will certainly be looking for new jobs. Ticket sales will plummet and fans might start a riot. Besides, Wall could be the most popular pick since, or even more popular than, Lebron James.[PRBREAK][/PRBREAK]
What better measure of popularity do we have today than Google? I can’t think of any. So let’s just take a quick look at where Wall stands compared to previous draft picks dating back to Lebron James in 2003. To complete this experiment, we’ll have to do this one more time after this years NBA draft.
The experiment is simple, we will perform a Google search for “player name nba draft” and capture the total number of results for each.
2003 Lebron James – 3,020,000
2004 Dwight Howard – 409,000
2005 Andrew Bogut – 78,900
2006 Andrea Bargnani – 73,100
2007 Greg Oden – 133,000
2008 Derrick Rose – 333,000
2009 Blake Griffin – 126,000
2010 John Wall – 647,000

Interesting results, right? Three weeks before the 2010 NBA draft and John Wall is more popular, at least to Google, than the last six overall number one picks. The question now is, will Wall become more popular than Lebron James?
