To honor Steve Spurrier turning 70 on Monday, Josh Kendall, who covers South Carolina for The State, worked out with the Head Ball Coach. As you can see below, there’s video proof. What’s more, the two posed together — shirtless — post-workout.
Keep up the spirit coach Steve
The two did crunches, pumped iron, and got in cardio work before posing at the end of their sweaty workout without shirts.
- There workout includes the following moves:
He does two sets of shoulder presses with barbells. Fifty with 15-pounders and 40 with 10-pounders. He does 200 shoulder shrugs with 30-pound barbells, two long sets of curls, 50 tricep extensions with a 25-pound barbell (I think it was 25 pounds; oxygen depletion may have affected my memory.) There are 100 toe raises with the 30-pound barbells; 22 minutes on the treadmill; 11 minutes on the stationary bike at a not-insignificant incline. At some point, I’m thinking it’s never going to end, although I’m trying to keep a brave face.
More than the wondrous sight of seeing Spurrier workout in a bandana headband and sweater vest, the story is really about him being in fantastic shape and healthy as he approaches his 70s. Spurrier tells Kendall that he’s in better shape now than when he won the Heisman Trophy in 1966, and during the season, he works out six days a week. That’s quite a routine!
