Tired of the One and Done Talk

Don’t criticize what you don’t understand. That is my message to everyone that writes an article or talks about one and done recruits like they are the bane of college sports. How many people reading this article have accepted a job knowing their intention was to “get into the door” and have an opportunity for something better in a year? Are the two situations that much different? No.[PRBREAK][/PRBREAK]

There are a couple of key points to consider when talking about one and done’s: the athlete and the school. It is every basketball players dream to play in the NBA. There isn’t one guy entering the college game that doesn’t have a dream of playing in the league. Some of them know they won’t make it, but it doesn’t stop even those guys from dreaming about it. Being drafted and playing in the NBA is a dream come true; it’s as simple as that. If you have the opportunity for your dream to come true after a single year in school, then good for you.

Next comes the school that recruits players who have the potential to enter the league after only a year. You can’t dispute that players who fall into that category are the best players in the nation. Since when is it a bad thing to recruit the best possible talent? School’s are putting a lot of resources into these players. Strength, conditioning and on and off the court development. Suspected one and done’s are not being used, they are being nurtured and developed.

So instead of putting a negative spin on this scenario, why not sit back and look at the obvious. A one and done player is the best talent playing for a program that invests heavily into their future to help make their dreams come true. The rules of the league create one and done players at the college level. As the saying goes, don’t hate the player, hate the game.

Say what you want about Kentucky being a stepping stone and Coach Cal recruiting potential one and done players. I am behind it for the right reasons and if it happens to net us a national championship, then I’m down with that too.
