What does the chicken pox, a gold medal and a basketball tournament in South Carolina get you? A well deserved six week break. So says Kentucky recruit Michael Gilchrist anyway. Apparently basketball players who are ranked number one in the country need rest too and Gilchrist has announced his hibernation…from the court.[PRBREAK][/PRBREAK]
“I just want to have fun with my friends now,” said Gilchrist, according to ESPN.com. “I don’t really have anything planned,” he added. “Just hang out.”
Gilchrist had a case of chicken pox and missed the first week of Team USA training. However he got healthy in a hurry and was a solid contributor. Even though he didn’t start and averaged only 19 minutes per game, Gilchrist was second on the world championship team in both scoring (14.8 points per game) and rebounding (7.2). His best outing was a 30-point, 15-rebound performance in a 103-83 semifinal victory over Canada.
“That was a great experience,” Gilchrist said. “It was different for me. Coming from America, I didn’t know what to expect when I went over there. But I had a good time.”
Well deserved break young man, well deserved.
