Coach Calipari On 2011 – Status Of Kanter

If we think the Class of 2011 can’t get any better, hang around and wait. Coach Calipari has recruited, what arguably, may be the greatest class in the history of Kentucky Basketball, but he’s not done yet.

With four of the top 25 players in the nation already committed, including three of the top six (No. 2 Michael Gilchrist, No. 3 Marquis Teague and No. 6 Anthony Davis according to Rivals), Calipari could be content, but that’s not the approach of Coach Cal when it comes to recruiting or anything else around the Commonwealth.

”We’re still out there actively looking. We’ve got good news all summer. We’ve got a lot of kids that want to be here, want to be a part of this program,” Calipari said.

When it comes to finalizing the 2011 class, Coach Calipari wants to approach the objective with caution.

”If we offered 25 scholarships here, there’s 25 takers. So we got to be careful and know who we are going after. It’s important for me that a young man really wants us, too. When young men say they want to play with other great players, that’s what you want to hear,” he said.

Calipari knows the impact of having the Kentucky name on your jersey, so having not only talent, but individuals who can accept the additional attention is critical.

”Things that go on at other campuses, it’s not that big a deal. If that goes on at this campus, it’s on 60 Minutes,” he said.

Coach Calipari points back to the success of placing five Cats in the first round of the 2010 NBA Draft as a spring board to the early success with the 2011 class, a class that will once again finish at No. 1.

Calipari said, “Don’t say that’s one of the biggest things that’s ever happened because you’ll get in trouble. I said, the next five years you’ll feel the effects of that night’ and it’s already started.”

Coach Calipari provided an update Tuesday on the status of freshman sensation Enes Kanter.

”Still going through the process,” Calipari said of Kanter. “The process with the foreign student will take a little longer, but I think in the next couple of weeks we’ll know.”
