George Blanda – UK And NFL Legend Dies At 83


Known as “The Ageless Wonder”, George Blanda passed away today just ten days after his 83rd birthday.

Blanda played under the great “Bear” Bryant at the University of Kentucky and was an example of the discipline and determination taught by “The Bear”.

George was the starting quarterback his last two seasons at Kentucky (1947 – 1948), compiling 120 completions in 242 passes (49.6 percentage), 1,451 yards and 12 touchdowns.

“The Ageless Wonder”, Blanda, played 27 years in the AFL/NFL, retiring at the age of 48 from the Oakland Raiders. His last game was a 16-10 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 1976 AFC Championship Game.

Recalling the time he met Bryant, Blanda said: “I thought this must be what God looks like.”

Blanda was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1981.
