Lets Talk Basketball Scholarships: 2011

Right now UK has eleven players on scholarship, and each Division I school is allowed 13 (those that aren’t on probation anyway, I’m looking at you Tennessee). Our current scholarships are held by:

Josh Harrellson
DeAndre Liggins
Darius Miller
Jon Hood
Enes Kanter
Terrence Jones
Eloy Vargas
Brandon Knight
Doron Lamb
Stacey Poole
Jarrod Polson

There are only two for sure leaving next year: Harrellson is a senior and nobody in their right mind expects Kanter to stay more than a year. That leaves 9 scholarship players returning. Plus, we have 4 new scholarship players coming in: Anthony Davis (PF), Kyle Wiltjer (PF), Marquis Teague (PG) and Mike Gilchrist (SF). That brings the scholarship number back up to 13, the most allowed by the NCAA. So is Cal done recruiting for that class? Probably not.

It’s a distinct possibility that either Jones or Knight (or both) are one-and-done, which would open up more scholarships. Honestly, I don’t see Knight leaving after one year. He seems to me to be intent on getting his degree, and it’s been stated earlier that he is so far advanced in his academics that he could graduate in two years, so I see Knight playing two years. Even if Jones and Knight both stay, Jarrod Polson was technically only offered a walk-on, so his scholarship can be used next year. And we haven’t even discussed the possibility that Miller or Liggins goes pro after this year.

All that to say, I see one more scholarship being given out in the 2011 class. So who gets it? My guess is Cal will go after a big man or a guard. With both Kanter and Harrellson leaving, and no bigs currently recruited for next year, you have to like 4-star C Michael Chandler’s chances. The only other player from that class I see Cal possibly signing is 4-star SG Trevor Lacey if he feels he needs another guard. Both of these players have Kentucky high on their lists. Either way, I’m sure the current Cats will give us plenty to keep our minds busy until 2011.
