Top-ranked South Carolina held off No. 10 Kentucky to win 68-60 on Sunday, but BBN hearts are heavy after another devastating injury.
Janee Thompson suffered what appeared to be a gruesome injury and was taken to a local hospital in Columbia where she was diagnosed with a dislocated left ankle. The injury occurred with under five minutes remaining, leaving much of the team in tears as play resumed. The emotionally-charged atmosphere added to the Cats’ frustration. A short time later Coach Matthew Mitchell was ejected following two quick technicals for protesting a non-foul call. Mitchell declined comment on the game’s officiating. Thompson averaged 14.5 points and 6.5 assists in two games last week, earning the guard SEC Player of the Week Honors for the second time this season. Kentucky moves to 14-3 on the season, 3-1 in SEC play. UK faces Florida on Thursday night at 7 p.m. ET in Memorial Coliseum. The game will be shown live on the SEC Network.
