This was not the night for the Cats. Kemba Walker and the UConn Huskies dominated from the start and came out with the 84-67 victory to win the Maui Invitational. Walker led the Huskies with 29 points on 10-17 shooting.
The Cats were led by Terrence Jones who had 24 points. Darius Miller had 15. The big absence tonight was Brandon Knight, who had his worst game as a Wildcat. Knight had 6 points on 3-16 shooting.
This is a great game to learn from for the young Cats, who get back to action Tuesday vs. Boston U. in Rupp Arena. Coach Cal was making up losses last year to learn from, but he will not have to do that this year. There are a lot of improvements the Cats need to do on the defensive end to be able to stay in games consistently when the offense is not going so good. The Huskies shot 58.8% from the field and teams that give up that type of percentage aren’t going to win a lot of games.
UConn played a very good tournament and will surely be ranked at least in the top 15 next week. The Cats have nothing to be ashamed of as they ran into the hottest team in America. This is a great learning experience and hopefully everyone on the team takes it as one.
