NBADraft.com had an interesting article about the Maui Invitational. For those of you who don’t follow NBADraft.com, it is basically what it sounds like – a website that tracks college and European prospects and where they are believed to fall in the upcoming draft. Yesterday they did a writeup on the top prospects coming out of the Maui Invitational.
The first thing I noticed was that they only reviewed two recruits from UConn (Kemba Walker and Alex Oriakhi) – the team that won the championship. They reviewed four players each from Kentucky and Michigan State. Three of the Kentucky reviews were pretty obvious – Terrence Jones, Brandon Knight and Doron Lamb. All of these were previously talked about by NBA scouts, so no surprise there, but the fourth one they mentioned was DeAndre Liggins.
Before you get all excited for DeAndre, the review wasn’t entirely flattering. While the NBA scouts praised Liggins’ size, athleticism, versatility and ability to handle the ball, they questioned his decision-making. Most of the scouts they heard from actually predicted Liggins to go into the D-League or Euro-ball, but we’ve seen Calipari do more with less. If DeAndre can learn to make better decisions with the ball, the sky’s the limit. How many can Cal get into the League this year (presuming no lockout)?
