The Class Of 2011 Stakes Their Claim To The Numbers

For the recruiting Class of 2011, there are four numbers that count, 1, 5, 6 and 19.

University of Kentucky and Anthony Davis consume claim to the Number 1. Kentucky because of the four gentlemen this article highlights and the programs third straight Number 1 recruiting class in the nation and Davis by his current ranking in the Class of 2011.

Anthony Davis came out of nowhere last year, growing seven inches during the off-season and moving from a guard to power forward position. Davis simply keeps getting more and more skilled, and given his length and athleticism that is a scary thought for schools not named Kentucky in the SEC.

Michael Gilchrist, the young man who held the rank of number 1 for the majority of the 2009-2010 year, comes in at number 5 on Scout’s latest ranking. He’s a 6-9 power forward who is one of the few guys you can see ticketed for stardom. He works on his game, loves to compete, has the package as a transition player, defender and person. He’s a winner who values being on the right side of the scoreboard.

Out of Indianapolis, Ind, Marques Teague grabs the number 6 overall spot. He’s the number 1 point guard, giving Kentucky the top PG for the third straight year. Teague is a big time guard that can score, pass and create for himself and others. He’s only getting better. His brother Jeff was a late bloomer and he’s tracking ahead of his NBA sibling at the same stage.

Kyle Wiltjer from Portland’s Jesuit High School claims a top 20 spot at number 19. When it comes to Wiltjer, analysts agree that the 6-9 Power forward, could be a nightmare matchup for opponents because of his shooting ability. It’s an assessment that Wiltjer not only accepts, but one that he relishes. “I like to think I can look at the defense and see who is guarding me and take advantage of the matchup,” Wiltjer said. “If it is a smaller player, I can post him up. If it is a bigger player, I can take him on the perimeter.”

Together, like the 09 and 10 classes, these four gentlemen will be lethal. With this class, Calipari brings what Kentucky needs, height. Davis at 6-10, Wiltjer at 6-9 and Gilchrist at 6-6.

Here’s all four in action compliments of City League Hoops.
