Here’s my AP Poll for this week with plenty of changes – including bouncing out a Memphis team that can’t even beat Arkansas State or Austin Peay in regulation.
1. Duke (10-0) *1 – The Blue Devils didn’t play last week, but remained in the headlines due to the uncertainty involving star freshman point guard Kyrie Irving and whether his toe will allow him to play again this season.
2. Ohio State (10-0) *2 – Freshman Jared Sullinger continues to dominate, this time going for 30 points and 19 rebounds in a rout against South Carolina.
3. Kansas (10-0) *3 –Freshman Josh Selby wasted little time making an impact as he scored 21 points and canned the game-winning 3-pointer in his debut to help the Jayhawks avoid the upset over USC.
4. UConn (8-0) *5 – The Huskies were off this past week and have two home games this week against Coppin State and Harvard. Junior guard Kemba Walker leads the nation in scoring at 28.1 points per game.
5. San Diego State (12-0) *9 – Kawhi Leonard sat out the tight win against Cal Poly last week due to the flu, but he returned and put up 13 points and seven boards in a rout over a UC Santa Barbara team that was coming off a win against UNLV. Malcolm Thomas led the way with 18 points and 10 boards.
6. Syracuse (11-0) *7 – Iona’s Mike Glover continued his stellar play, but the Orange got 21 points from Kris Joseph and held on for the 83-77 win against the Gaels.
7. Pittsburgh (11-1) *8 –Fifth-year senior Gilbert Brown scored a career-high 28 points and made 4-of-5 shots from beyond the arc in a rout over Maryland Eastern-Shore.
8. Georgetown (10-1) *12 – The Hoyas had no problem taking care of Loyola (Md.) and freshman Nate Lubick had his best overall game of his career with eight points and five assists.
9. Missouri (10-1) *13 – Freshman Phil Pressey, who has started the past two games in place of suspended Michael Dixon, has averaged 11.5 points and 9 assists in routs over Oral Roberts and Central Arkansas.
10. Villanova (9-1) *11 – After making just 8-of-50 shots from the field over his last four games, Corey Fisher made 7-of-13 and finished with 21 points in a 78-59 win against Delaware.
11. Minnesota (10-1) *14 – Starting point guard Al Nolan remains out with a foot injury, but the Gophers got another double-double from Trevor Mbakwe (13 points, 13 rebounds) in a win over Akron.
12. Michigan State (8-3) *17 – Tom Izzo was hit with a one-game suspension by the NCAA for a secondary violation, but it made no difference as associate head coach Mark Montgomery led the Spartans to the rout over Prairie View A&M.
13. Kentucky (8-2) *20 – The Wildcats pounded Mississippi Valley State – which is coached by former UK guard Sean Woods.
14. Notre Dame (10-1) *21 – The Irish pounded Stony Brook on Sunday in its lone game of the week.
15. Central Florida (10-0) *22 – The Knights remained unbeaten with a victory in Sunrise, Fla., over Miami. Marcus Jordan was on the bench down the stretch with an ankle injury.
16. Florida (8-2) *NR – The Gators got a huge win against Kansas State down in Sunrise, Fla., and have earned their way back into the poll.
17. Kansas State (9-2) *6 –Frank Martin’s return to Florida didn’t exactly go as planned as the Wildcats got smacked by the Gators in Sunrise, Fla. Kansas State got just five points from the starting big man tandem of Freddy Asprilla and Curtis Kelly.
18. Tennessee (7-2) * 4 – The Vols were coming off a huge win at Pittsburgh, but couldn’t sustain it – falling twice this past week, first to Oakland at home and then on the road against a sub-.500 Charlotte team.
19. Purdue (10-1) *19 – E’Twaun Moore didn’t get on the board in the first 20 minutes, but had 16 after the break and JaJuan Johnson went for a career-high 31 in a 65-52 win against Indiana State.
20. Texas (9-2) *NR – The Longhorns earned their way back into the Top 25 after what was basically a road win over North Carolina in Greensboro.
21. Illinois (10-2) *15 – The Illini are tough to figure. Mike Davis and Mike Tisdale combined for just six points and six rebounds in a loss to UIC at the United Center.
22. BYU (10-1) *16 – Jimmer Fredette finished with 25 points, but had seven turnovers as the Cougars lost for the first time this season to UCLA out in the Wooden Classic in Anaheim.
23. Baylor (7-1) *10 – The Bears had an easy schedule to begin the season and were still somewhat of an unknown heading into Saturday’s game in Dallas against Gonzaga. Scott Drew’s team had just five assists and 17 turnovers in a loss to the ‘Zags.
24. Northwestern (7-0) *24 – John Shurna scored 28 points and Michael Thompson added 23 in a 78-62 win over American that got the Wildcats off to their best start since 1993-94.
25. Texas A&M (10-1) *25 – The Aggies needed overtime to knock off Arkansas in Dallas. Khris Middleton scored 31 points in the win.
Dropped Out: No. 18 Memphis; No. 23 Louisville
