You may have read that Calipari has not lost 2 games in a row since the 2004-2005 season. You may remember he lost the first game this week against Alabama. He’s not lost more than 4 games in a season since 04-05 either. You may remember Kentucky is currently at four losses (UConn, North Carolina, Georgia and Alabama).

We’ve kind of been spoiled though; it usually takes Calipari 3-5 years to master his conference. At UMass (Atlantic 10 conference), Cal went 5-13, 10-8 and 10-8 his first three seasons. After that he won the regular season and conference tournament EVERY YEAR for the next five years. He then went to Memphis (Conference USA), where he struggled at 10-6, 12-4, 13-3, 12-4 and 9-7 his first five seasons. After that he won the regular season and conference tournament EVERY YEAR for the next four years.

Then Calipari came to Kentucky, where he won the regular season and conference tournament his first year. Can he do it every year from now on? Probably not. It usually takes Cal a little longer than that to master a conference, and the SEC isnt’ the Atlantic 10 or Conference USA. Even if Cal’s Cats don’t win the regular season this year in the SEC, they are going to be very strong come tournament time. Both tournaments. Trust me.
