Martin Newton, Kentucky’s director of basketball operations, is going to be introduced Wednesday as the new athletics director at Samford University, multiple sources close to the school said Monday.
Newton is the son of former Kentucky athletics director and former Alabama basketball coach C.M. Newton. The elder Newton confirmed two weeks ago that his son had interviewed for the Samford job.
“Timing is everything for athletics directors and coaches,” C.M. Newton said then. “I think he’s a great fit at this time. That’s a dad talking and an old AD talking.”
Martin Newton is a Samford graduate who started at point guard for the school’s basketball team. He led the team in assists in 1979-80 and 1980-81. He’s taking over the AD job that opened when Bob Roller resigned in November after 11 years.

It will be interesting to see who takes Newton’s place and the names that come out of the people that are interested in the job. You would have to think it will be someone close to Coach Calipari and that has a good working relationship with him.
