The Southeastern Conference is thinking about doing away with the SEC East and West and going back to the old way of no divisions.

The SEC will consider abandoning men’s basketball divisions during the conference’s upcoming spring meetings, SEC Commissioner Mike Slive said Friday.

Slive said the conference office will present ideas to coaches and athletics directors about a 12-team league without divisions and how to schedule. Most conferences don’t have divisions in basketball, and there’s a feeling by some that the SEC’s structure gives a false picture of its best teams to the NCAA Tournament selection committee.

Alabama’s record of 12-4 in the conference wasn’t good enough to get them into the NCAA tournament and not playing the SEC East more really hurt their chance to making the tournament.

Strength of schedule is definitely a priority and when teams play a weak nonconference schedule it hurts the chances of making the tournament, no matter what a team’s conference record is.

The SEC West teams will benefit from this move, but I don’t see any effect on the teams in the East.
