Cleveland is #1… at Failing

It depends on who you ask if today’s NBA draft news is surprising. Cleveland has informed Kyrie Irving that he will be their #1 overall selection in the upcoming draft.

This is the best news Cavs fans could hope for, aside from Cleveland disbanding the Cavalier franchise altogether, of course. Yep, just another day at the office of fail for the Cleveland Cavalier brass. With their newly unveiled plans to get Irving and trade the #4 pick away, Cavalier fans can now cancel their season passes and continue to not pay their cable bills, because next season is completely lost.

Take a look at the Cleveland Cavalier Roster, if you dare. These are the Cleveland’s best 3 players: Baron Davis, JJ Hickson and a 12-way tie for 3rd. What this tells me is that Cleveland needs to bulk up the ole roster with some young talent. No one in this draft is going to save any franchise by themselves, those guys only come around every 5 years or so. And this isn’t the 5th year. I repeat, IRVING WILL NOT SAVE THE CAVALIERS FRANCHISE, PERIOD.

I caught a lot of crap for my KSTV casting call for saying Kanter should be the #1 pick and drafting Irving would be a mistake. If I had longer than freaking 1 minute to explain further I would have also stated that drafting Knight would have also been a mistake.

The Cavs biggest need is not at PG, that’s why they paid $14 million dollars a year for Baron Davis. Daniel Gibson averages double digits and is a serviceable point guard.

Don’t pass on 2 elite talented big bodies for a good/not great guard.

Step 1 for rebuilding your NBA franchise: Draft a talented Big who can be the cornerstone for years to come. Cavaliers need depth on the inside. I mean, the only big guy they have is Sideshow Bob. And when he’s not busy trying to kill Bart Simpson, he starts at center for this team. THAT’S A PROBLEM! Get some talent in the post and have mutant-Kenny G back up a guy like Kanter or Williams.

Step 2: Get a talented guard for the future who can learn under your expensive veteran PG for a couple of years and replace him when he is traded or retires (If you can get Irving here then great, but Knight is more than likely a more viable option here at #4). Knight can shoot, he is very smart and showed in the NCAA tournament he can hit the clutch shot in a hostile atmosphere. If neither player is available at #4, you can still get a valuable point with Kemba Walker.

If Irving does in fact go #1, Cleveland risks not getting Williams or Kanter and having Knight and Vesely to choose from. They obviously won’t pick Knight, so they will have to pick the Czech kid and settle for a front court that’s offense is as good as its English.

Step 3: Don’t trade any picks. No trade will benefit you this year. No one is going to give up anything of value for the #4 spot this year. Thus you will be stuck with another ridiculous contract and have to pay a veteran who has a bad attitude and counts the days till he leaves the state of Ohio.

Stay the course follow steps 1 and 2 and 2011-12 can be your bridge year (bridge year? That’s ridiculous, who says stuff like that?). Or tank for another year, who cares.
