UK wins, but has much to learn

We finally got to see the 2011-2012 version of the Cats play in an actual competitive game. Albeit it was a 40+ point victory against a D-3 team, it was the start of a beautiful season of college basketball. Speaking of beautiful, this game was anything but.

The Transylvania..what is their mascot again? Hmm, ok I got it. The Transylvania Fighting Ligers put up a valiant fight and the only wide eyed people were the ones in Rupp Arena seats during the first 5 minutes. Transy couldn’t miss a 3 to begin the game and UK couldn’t make one. As UK fans had flashbacks of West Virginia 2010, Cal told his team to drive to the hole. The game quickly became a layup line for the Cats.

UK seemed to fall into the “What’s this defense thing people keep talking about?” mindset. UK seemed to get behind Teague and Kidd-Gilchrist’s defensive intensity by only allowing 30 more points after the initial Liger onslaught.

Speaking of Kidd-Gilchrist, he was the truth tonight as I believe he was UK’s best player on the floor for most of the night. How does he not start? Did you know Cal asked the same question after the game? So Kidd-Gilchrist solidified himself as one of the team’s best 5 players. MKG is the best finisher on the team as well as the best on ball defender. I love his game.

Jones had 22, Lamb and MKG had 19 to lead the Cats in the scoring column. Anthony Davis struggled offensively as we thought he might, but was terrific on the defensive end. Davis will have an impact on every game this year and those blocked shots will come in handy in a tightly contested game. He’ll be just fine.

All in all, not the greatest game ever, but the Cats were dominant, as they should have been. Now, it’s time to get better and get ready for Kansas in 12 days. But for now, Cats win, Cats win, Cats win.
