UK, the Worst Offense in the Country, Beats down the Johnnies

UK rolled up St. Johns 81-59 Thursday night, but this time it was the defense that won the game.

The first half was a bit of a struggle for the Cats offensively, but that has been their MO all year long. Outside of the Marist game, Kentucky has had trouble putting the ball in the basket in the first 5 minutes of the game. Is that any reason to worry? No. Not when you play the type of defense that UK has been playing. Let’s talk a little more about that defense.

UK had 18 total team blocks. The Red Storm may have some nightmares that include one intense Eyebrow. Anthony Davis had 8 of those 18 blocks while Jones contributed with 4 of his own. Those blocks led to fast breaks and those fast breaks blew the game wide open in the 2nd half.

Anthony Davis was player of the game as he notched 15 points, 15 rebounds and 8 blocks. Coach Cal pulled him off the floor with 6 minutes, otherwise he would have achieved UK’s 2nd ever Triple Double. While Davis has yet to make a jumper or a shot more than 5 feet away from the basket, he is crazy good on the defensive end…and dunking.

Darius Miller had a good night statistically but had a great night of highlight plays. In fact, he owned all of UK’s top plays. one was a spin move to lose a defender that ended with an Oop to Davis and the other was a one handed tomahawk slamajamma Thunderdunk. A play like that truly shows you what kind of athlete Miller is and what he is capable of. Maybe this is what all the players were talking about when they told Miller “Do what you do in practice IN A GAME!!!”

Terrence Jones had a great night as well. He had 26 points, 4 steals, 4 blocks and 9 rebounds. Jones had incredible effort and poise all night long. Jones is this team’s one true post player who can create his own shot and we will need that against UNC Saturday.

Daron Lamb may have had the quietest 16 points you’ve never…heard? Lamb continues to provide those backbreaking 3’s and runners.

MKG and Teague struggled tonight, but that’s alright since UK didn’t need them. I wouldn’t worry too much about Teague. Earlier in the season he was trying to do too much. Now he’s trying not to screw up. Soon, he’ll just…play ball. He’ll be fine.

Cal called this team the worst offense in the country, I don’t know about that, but I know this: We just beat the crap out of the Johnnies.
