For years, John Calipari has created a brand for himself and his program with the consistent development of premiere point guards. From Memphis to Lexington, Calipari has bred elite point guards.
With his success, high school stars have taken notice. Emmanuel Mudiay (Grace Prep Academy) is one of the better point guards of the 2014 class, and he likes what Calipari’s system has offered for past players.
“I think I would fit in really well in Coach [John] Calipari’s offense,” he began. “He has had players like Derrick Rose, Tyreke Evans, John Wall, Brandon Knight, and Marquis Teague, and he always gets the top players. It’s impressive.”
Mudiay’s main goal, like many kids of his caliber, is to make it to the NBA. There is no doubt Kentucky would prepare him, but he isn’t overlooking what college has to offer.
“I like the way Kentucky plays. They get up and down the court. They are all stars, but Coach Calipari makes them play team-ball. And he still brings out the best in each player. It looks fun.”
Kentucky has also noticed Mudiay’s talent, as they have already extended a scholarship offer to the 6-foot-3 point guard.
Baylor, Texas, North Carolina, Duke, Arizona, Virginia, Missouri, and the rest of the Big 12 are after him right now, too.
“I have some great schools, but I am keeping my options open. I have plenty of time [to make a decision],” Mudiay explained.
Mudiay is also coming off a state championship season where his team featured Baylor’s Isaiah Austin, Oklahoma’s Jelon Hornbeak, and fellow Kentucky recruit Jordan Mickey. It is safe to say Grace Prep does not lack talent.
“We had a great season. I want to thank God for letting us win the state championship and letting me get better. My coach didn’t let me settle any during the year,” he said.
“I like that about a coach. I want someone that will challenge me,” Mudiay added.
Now Mudiay will turn his head towards AAU season, where he will be on the circuit with Texas Select.
“I just want to get better every day. I hope to improve all summer,” he said when asked what he hoped to accomplish this summer.
It should be a big summer for the point guard. Kentucky, along with other top program, will be hot on his trail during the live periods.
