Kentucky Showing New Interest in Karviar Shepherd

With Kentucky becoming more and more predominantly known for its big men over the past few years, John Calipari is on the lookout for a post player to replace Nerlens Noel in the Class of 2013. Several names have risen with interest, and more are being added.

Karviar Shepherd (Grace Prep, Tex.), a 6-foot-10 power forward, is one of the most underrated players in the 2013 class. Because of injuries and other occurrences, he has not been able to play complete high school seasons and showcase his game to coaches.

However, according to his father, Shepherd is beginning to see his recruitment take off.

“Kentucky has been showing recent interest,” Gregory Hartwell said by phone Wednesday night. “Kansas, Texas, Texas A&M, Baylor, Alabama, LSU, Georgetown, Louisville, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State are several schools that have also reached out to the Texas-native.

For those unaware of Shepherd’s game and skill-level, Hartwell shared the strengths of his son’s game:

“Karviar is very good defensively and a great rebounder. He also runs the floor very well for his size, but his biggest strength is his toughness. He is such a tough kid and player.”

Shepherd attends Grace Preparatory Academy in Texas, along with fellow Kentucky recruits Emmanuel Mudiay and Jordan Mickey. Like his friends, Hartwell said the junior is very impressed with Kentucky and its program.

“Karviar is very interested,” he explained. “Coach [John] Calipari gets players to the next level. It’s big-time basketball up there at Kentucky.”

The coaching staff has spoke with Shepherd directly, but Hartwell says he fields most calls regarding UK to this point.

While he is a great talent, Hartwell is confident that his son is just experiencing the tip of the iceberg right now.

“It’s scary to think what Karviar could be like in July. He is getting to play and he continues to develop. He could be a scary player here soon.”
