Former Kentucky backup center Eloy Vargas has been signed by the New York Knicks for the NBA Summer League.

Vargas had been playing in the Santo Domingo League in the Dominican Republic where he averaged 19.4 points and 13.4 rebounds with San Lazaro. He was also Rookie of the Year and first team all tournament in the Districto Nacional League.

After working out for New York Knicks, Atlanta Hawks and the Los Angeles Lakers, Eloy received an offer from the Knicks and he accepted.

Eloy’s agent, Glenn Schwartzman of Alliance Sports Management, is looking forward to the 6’11” center’s run with the Knicks in Vegas.

“Eloy is looking to showcase his stuff for the Knicks, but also for the other 29 teams in the NBA and everyone else internationally. Not only is he healthy, but he is back playing at a high level and it will be a good opportunity for him.”

Schwartzman also thinks Eloy’s rebounding and energy could increase his chances of making a NBA roster.

“You look at a guy like Chris Anderson that was an energy guy for the Heat, blocking shots and running the floor and doing some good things. If Eloy can bring a special skill like that he could be used situationally as a role player.”

The New York Knicks open the Las Vegas Summer League on July 12 vs. the New Orleans Pelicans at 1pm in the Cox Pavilion.
