Three years after being hired onto Calipari’s close-knit staff at Kentucky, graduate assistant Brandon Weems is moving on in his career.
Coach Cal announced Weems’s departure today via twitter, congratulating Brandon and wishing him luck in his new position under Drexel head coach Bruiser Flint.
When Weems joined Kentucky’s program prior to the 2009 basketball season, his arrival sparked public interest because of his close relationship with NBA star LeBron James. As high school teammates at St. Vincent St. Mary high school in Ohio, the two have remained friends and this has created a strong tie between LeBron and Kentucky. It is no secret that LeBron is a UK supporter and he has made several visits to campus during Weems’s time here.
Before coming to Kentucky, Weems had a standout collegiate career as a point guard at Walsh University in Ohio, and was named an All-American in his senior year on the team.
Calipari called him an “integral part” of his staff, and he will surely be missed by the Big Blue Nation. Weems certainly seemed to return the sentiment, as he tweeted this earlier today:
#S/O to the whole #BBN and everyone who has made my experience at UK special! I appreciate all the love and support. I will 4ever bleed blue

Best of luck to Brandon as he moves to Philadelphia! Once a part of the BBN, always a part of the BBN.
