Calipari Steals Olympic Spotlight

Even when John Calipari’s team gets beat by 54 points he somehow finds a way to steal the spotlight.

Anthony Davis played a huge role in that, as well as 15 year old Dominican sensation Karl Towns.

Such is the genius of John Calipari, the Kentucky coach who has moonlighted for the past two years on the FIBA circuit. The game itself had his fingerprints all over it, most notably in the form of Anthony Davis, who made his Team USA debut mere months after leading the Wildcats to a national championship. When Davis sank a 3-pointer in the fourth quarter, he turned toward the Dominican Republic bench and woofed at Calipari. “He was telling me that I never let him shoot threes at Kentucky,” Calipari said.

Then the real twist: Calipari promptly drew up a play for one of his younger players, a 6-foot-11 center named Karl Towns, who is — wait for it — a 16-year-old sophomore-to-be at St. Joseph High School in Metuchen, N.J. Calipari told Towns to launch a 3-pointer over Davis. Towns missed.

“I wanted him to make it so bad,” Calipari said.
