It’s no argument that John Calipari is one of the best college basketball coaches of our time, if not of all-time. Just with the announcement of his hiring in 2009, it seems as if the program went from nosedive to National Championship contender overnight. And with the results we’ve seen the past three years it can only be assumed that Kentucky’s sky has no limits. But, at what cost does each spectacular season come?

The “one and done” rule really does change the shape of college hoops. Yes, it’s netted win after win for Kentucky the past few years (no complaining here), but it takes something away from the game. It takes something away from the nostalgia of rooting for your team. It takes away your team.

Each year there is a new line-up, filled to the brim with talented freshman who are gone just as quickly as they came. Many want to pin this phenomenon to Calipari, as if it is an idea or a culture that he created. Granted, he may be a proponent of the philosophy, but it’s no fault to him…or even Kentucky or the NCAA for that matter; it’s just the way it is. He has simply mastered the art of adapting to his environment.

Bottom line? Sure, Coach Cal has taken advantage of the “one and done” rule. Why? Because he’s just that good. Sure, Kentucky is a NBA “feeder team.” Why? Because they’re just that good. Sure, everyone hates us.Why? Because we’re just that good.
