The Boston Herald looks at the possibility of the worst team in the NBA, the Charlotte Bobcats, have of getting the #1 pick in the NBA Draft.
In other words, for the chance to pick Anthony Davis.
But even with the worst record, Charlotte has only a 1-in-4 chance of getting the first pick – which is absolutely going to be Davis, which is why he’d be foolish not to come out – when the NBA draft lottery is conducted May 30. The Bobcats, in other words, have a 75 percent of not getting Davis. Their chances of each pick assuming they stay the NBA’s worst, in which case they are guaranteed no worse than the No. 4 pick:
No. 1: 25 percent
No. 2: 21.5 percent
No. 3: 17.8 percent
No. 4: 35.7 percent.
At No. 2, No. 3 or No. 4, the Bobcats can still get a very good player. But there’s no one else like Davis in this draft. If the Bobcats got him:
Their huge problem in defending the paint would be mostly solved. This is what Davis would bring right away. Bismack Biyombo is a poor man’s Davis at this point in his career – a similar skill set, but not quite as good as Davis at blocking shots or rebounding and not nearly as good at handling the ball. But if they could both play down low at the same time, the Bobcats’ defense becomes a force instead of a sieve.
They still would have problems scoring. You saw Davis’ 1-for-10 shooting night Monday. Yes, he was a guard until age 16 when he had a massive growth spurt, but he’s hardly Kevin Durant. Charlotte will still need to use some offseason cap space to acquire more scoring.I know Davis can hit the occasional 3-pointer, but he’s still going to need a lot of teammates (like he had at Kentucky) to score. He won’t average 20 points per game right away – more like 10-14.
