Vincent Goodwill of The Detroit News says former Kentucky star Brandon Knight is preparing for an important offseason.
Knight, who is just two years removed from high school, is finishing up a great first season with the Detroit Pistons.
Hopefully Knight will look at John Wall as an example of what “not” to do during the summer after his rookie season. Wall has publicly stated that he spent too much time playing in charity games and summer leagues rather than working out in productive ways. As a result, Wall feels his rookie-to-sophomore development was hindered.
Here is an excerpt:
Think about this for a moment. Two years ago, Knight was a senior in high school, preparing to attend the University of Kentucky for his lone season. Now he’s about to enter what could be the biggest offseason of his career.
“It’s a huge summer between your first and second year,” Pistons coach Lawrence Frank said. “After your first, you’re a (legit) NBA player. Some people sail a little bit, think ‘I’ve arrived.'”
But there’s nothing to suggest Knight will rest on any accomplishments. He has the credit equivalent of a college junior. He’s often the last player on the floor after practices and morning shootarounds, like a student who feels like one more shot, one more drill will make the difference between failure and “getting it.”
“Just my coaches allowing me to see different things that I didn’t see at the beginning of the season,” Knight said of the difference between earlier in the season to now. “It just comes from knowing what to look for and once you play a team a certain amount of times, what should be open.”
