LEXINGTON, Ky. – TheKentucky football team had a good day of practice Friday and permanent teamcaptains were elected, but the good news was tempered by the announcement thatfreshman wide receiver Daryl Collins will miss the 2011 season because of aknee injury.
Collins, a native of Gadsden,Ala., was contending to be a part of the UK wide receiver rotation. Hesustained a dislocated kneecap in his right knee. Phillips said that Collinswill have surgery on Sept.1 and is expected to use this season as his redshirtyear.
“Daryl got hurt acouple of days ago and we were waiting for the evaluation to come back,”Phillips said after practice Friday. “He was right on the verge ofwhether or not he was going to be able to help us. We were going to continue towork with him and it was going to be hard to make that decision for the first gamebecause we wanted to make sure that he was going to play enough snaps to play.We were going to continue to work him and then maybe two weeks into the season,he has the ability to get a little better feel of the game and could havepossibly been in the mix then.”
On a positive note, Phillipswas pleased with how his team practiced Friday. Phillips said the Wildcats didsome head-to-head work but also practiced well against the scout team.
“We had good worktoday,” Phillips said. “We got to work together and against eachother on offense and defense and then we got going against our scouts andWestern Kentucky. It was a good ‘Tuesday’ (format) practice. Wehave two, Tuesday-type practices, one today and then one tomorrow. We have touse that time wisely to get ready for Western. The next day we will have aWednesday practice and then two Thursday-type practices. Today was really goodwork for us and we expect it to be more crisp tomorrow working the same type ofpractice.”
Phillips also announced thatsenior offensive lineman Stuart Hines and senior linebacker Danny Trevathanhave been elected as the team’s permanent captains for the 2011 season.Phillips will choose two additional game captains each week. Game captains areusually chosen on the basis of performance in the previous game.
