NCAA Division I Transformation Committee recommends expanding basketball tournaments

The NCAA Division I Transformation Committee released a number of recommendations today that would greatly change some aspects of college sports.

One recommendation was to expand the NCAA basketball tournaments to 90 teams for both men’s and women’s basketball.

Here is an excerpt of other recommendations via USA Today:

►Increasing the number of schools in NCAA Division I championships to 25% of the schools sponsoring a given sport, if the sport is sponsored by more than 200 schools. In men’s and women’s basketball, which is sponsored by roughly 360 schools, this would set the stage for the possible increase in the fields from the current 68 to at least 90.

►Changing Division I’s revenue distribution system so that it would account for athletic performance in sports other than men’s basketball. For decades, conferences’ collective performance in the men’s basketball tournament has been the determining factor in how one of the largest pools of money is divided.

►The creation of sport-by-sport “management committees” that would “oversee sport-specific rules and policies in assigned areas,” including the selection of postseason teams, and would have athlete representatives on the panels.

►Enhanced athlete health and welfare measures, including requirements that schools provide medical coverage for athletically related injuries for at least two years after completion of play; four-year scholarships; and funds that would allow athlete who was on a full-scholarship to complete their degree anytime within 10 years of the end of their college sports career.
