Lane Kiffin has agreed to a new contract and extension with Ole Miss after reportedly flirting with the Auburn job.
Kiffin told ESPN about the new deal on Saturday:
“I didn’t want it to be about me staying before the game, but about the team,” Kiffin told ESPN. “I didn’t want it to be a distraction to where everybody was talking about me staying versus the players, which is why I wanted them to know it would be announced after the game.”
Ole Miss is expected to make an official announcement sometime this weekend.
Sources told ESPN that Kiffin’s new deal will take his average annual salary to the $9 million range. He made $7.25 million this season.
According to Kiffin’s new best buddy Jon Sokoloff, Kiffin showed interest in Auburn but decided to stay with Ole Miss:
Sources have confirmed that while Lane Kiffin did show interest in the Auburn head coach opening, he has decided to remain with the Ole Miss Rebels and sign a new contract. An extension announcement is to be determined.
We originally reported Monday that sources said Ole Miss head football coach Lane Kiffin planned to step down Friday and become the next head coach of Auburn. Sources in the Ole Miss athletic department denied that report and sources close to Auburn said they had not offered the head coaching position to anyone as of the time of our original reporting.
