Correction: King Kelly’s place in rebounding history is still safe

Last Thursday, we reported that Belfry center Bol Kuir totaled 42 rebounds in a 78-77 victory over Lawrence County in double overtime.

The 42 rebounds were reported as a Belfry school record and the second-most in Kentucky high school basketball history. The record is 48 by Russ Milton of the new defunct Fredonia High School. Wayland legend “King” Kelly Coleman is next on the list with 41 rebounds vs. Maytown in 1956.

Based on curiosity and simply wanting to see some Kentucky basketball history, we decided to watch the game last night and track Kuir’s stats.

To our surprise, we only had Kuir with 31 rebounds after the double overtime thriller:

First Quarter: 7
Second Quarter: 3
Third Quarter: 10 (there were 2 that we were not sure about in quarter – one off a blocked shot and another on a tap)
Fourth Quarter: 5
Overtime 1: 5
Overtime 2: 1

TOTAL: 31

It was hard for us to believe that we missed 12 boards, so we had a high school coaching buddy chart the game as well. He also came up 31 rebounds for Kuir.

Now don’t get us wrong, we are thoroughly impressed with Bol Kuir and we are in no way trying to take away from his accomplishment. In fact, 31 rebounds is still a Belfry school record. Kuir has improved tremendously this season and can’t be blamed for a statistical error.

We just believe that the KHSAA record book has to be respected and statistical feats should be verified. We also didn’t feel comfortable reporting something that appears to be slightly off.

Obviously, Belfry’s official stats had Kuir with 42 boards:

We feel he had 31, but would be okay with calling it 33 based on the two plays mentioned above.

You can watch the game in its entirety here (shout out to David & Darryl Sports; they do great work on their live broadcasts)
