LOUISVILLE, Ky.-Bellarmine University’s final regular season men’s basketball game will be nationally televised on ESPNU Ted Gumbart, commissioner of the ASUN Conference, announced tonight. The announcement was made live on Coach Scott Davenport’s radio show on Monday night on 93.9 The Ville.
“I just spoke to Alystia Moore, and she is in charge of ESPN’s college basketball programming,” Gumbart said. “She confirmed that Saturday at noon…that they are going to televise on ESPNU Liberty versus Bellarmine live from Freedom Hall.”
The matchup will essentially decide the regular season ASUN champion. Currently, Bellarmine sits atop the standings with a 10-2 league record with Liberty at 9-2. The Flames, who were 20-point winners over North Alabama earlier today, will play the Lions again tomorrow with a chance to tie Bellarmine’s 10-2 mark.
Liberty, the defending ASUN Champion, rolled to a 30-4 record last season and is currently 18-5 this season.
Bellarmine, in its first year as a Division I member, was picked to finish last in the ASUN preseason media poll. However, the Knights have exceeded expectations and are 13-5 overall and currently on a 10-game winning streak.
In addition to the excitement of a national television audience, Bellarmine had already announced the game would be a “Fan Appreciation Game” with free parking at Freedom Hall thanks to gifts from Joe Reeves and ARGI Financial along with a generous anonymous donor. The game also will serve as Senior Day for men’s basketball and the spirit groups as well as observe the 10th anniversary of the 2011 NCAA Division II National Championship.
Over the past several weeks, the ASUN had to adjust its schedule and as a result, games were re-arranged. The original schedule had Bellarmine hosting North Alabama last weekend, but those games were played a week earlier in Florence, Alabama. As part of the re-shuffling and due to a scheduling conflict at Freedom Hall on Friday, the Saturday game will be the only game contest between Bellarmine and Liberty this weekend.
Due to the change in schedule, tickets for the game scheduled Saturday, Feb. 20 against North Alabama will be honored at the Saturday, Feb. 27 game against Liberty. Bellarmine will contact season ticket holders next week about issuing credits/refunds for games not played.
