Lawrence County High School has withdrawn from the 3A state playoffs due to COVID-19 and contact tracing.
The Bulldogs survived with a hard fought 22-20 win over Pike County Central in the first round of the playoffs Friday night.
They were scheduled for a rematch with Belfry in the next round, but that matchup is cancelled. The Pirates will move on to the next round and have a bye this week.
Lawrence County, which has battled COVID-19 issues all season, finishes with a record of 4-1.
Belfry (6-3) moves into the quarterfinals.

Football Season Ends Due to COVID-19
Unfortunately, another Lawrence County sports program’s season has ended as a result of COVID-19 and/or the contact tracing process. The shutdown that occurred in March closed all in-person educational opportunities, spring extra- and co-curricular competitions, and many other school events that we hold dear. Earlier this school year, we were blessed to have some in-person teaching opportunities, but our volleyball team had to sit out the first round of the playoffs due to contact tracing. Last week, the Governor issued an executive order that, once again, closed down all full-day, in- person learning but allowed the football playoffs to continue. The football team took advantage of the opportunity with a win in the first round (Go DAWGS!), but school officials received notice (today) that the contact tracing process will not allow our team to proceed to Round 2.
It is always difficult to close our doors to any/all opportunities for our students to participate on the court, on the field, and, especially, in the classroom. Our hearts go out to ALL students, regardless of the setting and regardless of how each have been impacted by school-related closures. Hopefully, we can get back inside the classroom and to our extra-/co-curricular events in the near future.
As always, we appreciate our community for being…. ALL IN!
