As I am sitting next to the window watching the snow come down, I am wondering what opponents think when they are getting ready to travel to Rupp Arena. Some of the most obvious comments come to mind:
“Why are we going?”
“Do we have to?”
“We won last year, let us just leave it at that!”
Now of course, me being a basketball coach, I know exactly what they are being told and in turn being led to believe.
“They are not that good!”
“You do what you are supposed to do and we will have a chance to win!”
“Lets just keep it close and we will have a shot!”
Now here is what John Chaney would say:
“I want you to go in, and I want you to start a fight with Cousins, then we will have a shot!”
“I will run Calipari off the road on the way to the game.”
“I want you to push that Wall kid into a wall and then hit him with a shovel, NOW!”
I am sure there are a lot of ways to motivate your players before you come to Rupp Arena, but I would say the best way to handle Rupp Arena is to just stay home and watch it on tv.
