LSU AD Joe Alleva Releases Statement About Yahoo! Sports Report

Two former LSU players, Tim Quarterman and Jarell Martin, were named in the Yahoo! Sports report on college basketball this morning.

In a statement released by LSU Communications, AD Joe Alleva had this to say:

“Today’s media reports are deeply disappointing to all of us who are fans of college basketball. While LSU has not been contacted by federal, league or NCAA officials, we can confirm a proactive and voluntary examination of current coaches and players was conducted by compliance officials and outside legal counsel in the Fall of 2017. That examination found the program in full compliance with NCAA, SEC and University rules and regulations. LSU will continue to monitor basketball and other athletic programs for NCAA and SEC rules compliance.”

According to SEC Country:

Alleva’s statement does nothing to address the compliance of former LSU coaches and players.

Quarterman attended LSU from 2013-16, while Martin was enrolled from 2013-15. Their coach, Johnny Jones, was fired from LSU last March due to the team’s poor performance on the floor.

The report by Yahoo’s Pat Forde and Pete Thamel reveals that Quarterman received a payment of at least $16,000 during his junior season.

Martin appears on the ledger for a loan of $52,472.72. However, the balance sheet is dated Dec. 31, 2015, by which time Martin was playing in his rookie season for the Memphis Grizzlies. It is unclear when Martin received the alleged payment.
