Calipari Says Jarred Vanderbilt Isn’t “Mentally Ready” to Play

According to John Calipari, Jarred Vanderbilt is physically ready to make his debut for Kentucky.

Interestingly, Calipari noted after last night’s game that Vanderbilt isn’t quite mentally ready to play.

Check out his comments:

Coach John Calipari said freshman Jarred Vanderbilt, who Calipari said has been practicing in recent days, isn’t quite ready to play mentally.

“He’s just not mentally ready to go on the court,” Calipari said. “I basically told him, ‘Listen, when you go in, you’re going to play seven or eight minutes a half, limited minutes for a while. I’m going to put you out there, let you run around, let you feel good about yourself and you’re out.’ But he’s going to have to make that decision. It’s more mental. I mean, he can play. He couldn’t play 40 minutes or anything like that, but he can play.”

Calipari said the 6-foot-9 Vanderbilt had “changed up the practice” and is a physical player that could help Kentucky’s frontcourt.

“What he does, I never remembered him being as physically strong as he is,” Calipari said. “He changed up practice. It was physical.

“I’m going to tell what else Jarred is. He’s a willing passer. When he gets it, the other team loves it because that team that’s playing with them know he’s passing. He’s a willing passer, which this team needs.”
