Although he is only a sophomore in high school, Andrew Wiggins has been drawing a lot of attention from Kentucky recently, and rightfully so.
The 6’6″ forward from Huntington Prep (WV) already possesses the consensus top spot in the class of 2014. He is a highly-skilled, elite-level athlete with a motor comparable to predecessors such as Shabazz Muhammad and Michael-Kidd Gilchrist. Wiggins has also drawn comparisons to players such as Kevin Durant and Michael Jordan.
Obviously, it’s very early in his recruitment, but he currently has two schools that stand out above the rest: Kentucky and Florida State.
Florida State would be a logical choice for Wiggins. His parents both made names for themselves at Florida State. His father, Mitchell Wiggins, was a basketball star and eventual NBA player. His mother, Marita Payne-Wiggins, was a track stand-out and eventual Olympian.
Yet, despite Florida State’s obvious advantage, Kentucky has positioned itself well in the contest for Wiggins’ services.
When asked about Kentucky’s chances, Rob Fulford, Wiggins’ coach at Huntington Prep told Adam Zagoria: “I think Kentucky’s obviously in it. They’re close to where we’re at. He went up to the North Carolina game. He went up to the Florida football game. He’s been there a couple times, and obviously Coach Cal was at a game a couple weeks ago.”
Kentucky has shown the most interest in Wiggins of any school up to this point, which will surely pay dividends when the 2014 star comes to a final decision, which he has planned for his senior year.
