2012 Commit Kyle Barrett has a Kentucky Heritage

I was able to talk with 2012 baseball recruit Kyle Barrett this morning regarding his commitment to Kentucky and his recent season in high school. Kyle is going into his senior year at Chapel Hill H.S. in Douglasville, GA. Other schools he considered were Maryland, Louisville, Mississippi, North Carolina, Georgia and Clemson, with offers from Maryland, Louisville and Ole Miss. He plans on majoring in Sports Medicine.

I asked him why he chose UK and Kyle said it’s always been his dream school. He was born and raised in Douglasville, GA, but his family is from London, KY. He was even named after former UK basketball great Kyle Macy. Barrett played basketball (and football) in high school, but when I asked if he had talked with coach Cal about walking on he said “no, that would be a dream.” He said at 5’ 11” and 175 lbs, he’s a little small to play basketball at Kentucky.

Barrett is an outfielder, and considers his speed the best part of his game. The latest stats I could find were from March, when he had a .564 BA, 19 runs, 22 hits, 2 HR and 6 stolen bases. Kyle said he finished his junior season with a .485 BA and 4 HR. His best moment this year was when his team played local powerhouse Sprayberry and Kyle was 3 for 3 at bat, including the first 3 runs of the game.

I knew Kyle was ranked the #325 player in the nation by Scout, and that he was All-Region and Team MVP his junior year. But he told me he’s been Team MVP, All-County and All-Region for all 3 years he’s played at Chapel Hill. Barrett’s favorite MLB team is Atlanta (no surprise there, as the Braves’ stadium is 25 minutes from his home), but when I asked if he had heard from any MLB scouts, he said the Yankees and the Cubs were the teams that had been in touch.

On a personal note, Barrett has a somewhat eclectic taste in music. He said he likes country music (specifically Brantley Gilbert) when he’s relaxing but prefers Lil Wayne when he’s warming up for a game. Oh, and if you want to follow him on Twitter, you can do so at @BSEBALL4LFE. When asked if there was anything else he wanted to say, he simply added “GO WILDCATS”.

Big thanks to Kyle for the interview. He should be an excellent addition to the 2012-2013 team.
